 Native parkland regeneration

The 25 acres surrounding Cliff House, once part of a larger farm, are being replanted to create a unique indigenous parkland. An onsite nursery grows locally collected seed for a large variety of native plants, and over the last eight years, in late Autumn and early Winter, approximately 5000 new seedlings have been added to the land. Ponds, wetlands and regenerating plant life are a haven for native birds. Paths and tracks meander through the landscape providing numerous vantage points to enjoy the spectacular scenery and observe the planting process first hand.

On the seaward side of the property, you can watch the ever-changing seascape below. Dine al fresco on the sun-soaked decks that surround the house and watch the dolphins, orca and yachts making their way along the coast. Whales can often be spotted further out to sea. Gannets and other marine-life thrive in the rich unpolluted waters.

Sustainable tourism

Cliff House has been playing its part in the development of sustainable tourism for over 10 years now. It’s an ongoing, ever-adapting process. Where possible we use eco light bulbs, kitchen waste is composted, earth friendly products from EcoStore NZ are used in the laundry, kitchen and bathrooms. New building materials are sourced sustainably. We’re 100% responsible for our own water supply and run our own waste treatment plant. We readily acknowledge our impact on the environment and address this through a carbon offset planting programme of native plants on the property.

A retreat for all seasons

Cliff House is available for you to enjoy all year round. Relax in the warmth and glow of the open fire during winter, or open the house to the cooling sea breeze during summer’s balmy heat. Generous awnings around the house provide a shady retreat from the Northland sun.

The open plan kitchen, dining and lounge areas have been designed to take full advantage of the breathtaking 180-degree views encompassing the bay below, north to Tutukaka Point and the Poor Knight Islands in the distance.

Cliff House is luxuriously appointed with contemporary furnishings and has every convenience to make your stay truly memorable.

At Cliff House, you can do as much or as little as you like to pass your time. Idle away a pleasant evening with friends and a glass of wine on the petanque court. Relax on the sun-drenched decks and watch the ocean’s changing vista. Meander along the paths and tracks, fly a kite on the clifftop, make cocktails and watch the sun go down.
